Jeannette Jacobs … a story of survival and determination
Sunday morning, January 19 at 10 at Bagelz, Wakefield
“Both my parents were from Poland. My mom ended up in the Lodz ghetto and then
Auschwitz and then the death march. My dad was from a small town called Sieradz. He
was drafted into the Polish army, was captured by the Germans, escaped, ended up in
Russia. He was arrested for being without papers and put in jail. He was then given the
choice of Siberia or the Russian army. He joined the Russian army. After some time, he
was injured badly and was hospitalized for many months. When he was released, he
went AWOL and then was caught and arrested and sent to a labor camp in Siberia. He
was released when the war ended. I was born after the war in a DP camp outside of
Munich. We all ended up in the Bronx where I grew up.” – Jeannette Jacobs.
